EU Leaders Discuss Peacekeeping Forces for Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says his country is discussing ideas with European leaders about deploying peacekeeping forces to the embattled nation. In a press briefing on December 18, Zelensky stated that Ukraine supports strengthening its country but emphasized the need for detailed discussions.

Zelensky’s comments come as he holds talks with EU and NATO leaders at a two-day European Summit in Brussels from December 18-19. The President met with French President Emmanuel Macron earlier in the day to discuss peacekeeping troops, and Macron mentioned that some European leaders are showing positive responses to this idea.

Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonson also expressed willingness to expand Sweden’s physical presence in Ukraine to strengthen its defenses. However, Ukrainian officials have made it clear that they will not consider security guarantees substituting NATO membership.

Ukrainian President Zelensky reiterated his stance on needing security guarantees and believes NATO membership offers the most effective solution. The country’s Foreign Ministry has also stated that Ukraine will refuse any kind of security guarantee if it does not offer full NATO membership. Andriy Yermak, head of the Presidential Office, said Ukraine is not prepared to engage in negotiations with Russia without sufficient Western support.

While European leaders are exploring ways to support Ukraine’s defense needs, President-elect Donald Trump has expressed interest in monitoring a potential ceasefire in Ukraine, according to The Wall Street Journal. However, it remains unclear what form this support would take.
