A scene in A24’s latest horror movie “Bring Her Back” has left many viewers shaken. The film, directed by twin brothers Danny and Michael Philippou, depicts a young boy being possessed by a demon or spirit, leading to graphic and disturbing behavior.
The most intense part of the scene involves the boy chewing through a kitchen counter, with some viewers even closing their eyes to watch it. However, in an interview with Polygon, director Danny Philippou revealed that the sound effects were enhanced using real-life sounds, such as biting on objects.
“We were doing ADR [auto-desync recording] and he loved it,” said Danny. The actor, Jonah Wren Phillips, reportedly expressed a desire for more “blood” during filming.
The Philippou brothers have spoken about their fascination with practical effects in horror movies, citing the work of Stanley Kubrick’s “The Thing”. They also highlighted the importance of on-set safety coaches and parental involvement to protect child actors like Phillips.
Despite the intense nature of the scene, both directors stated that they did not believe it would cause any long-term trauma for the young actor.
