Aaliyah Edwards stunned top-seeded Breanna Stewart 12-0 in the opening round of the Unrivaled 1-on-1 tournament, pulling off a major upset. The tournament features 23 of the league’s top players and is played over three days.
Edwards, who plays alongside Stewart on Unrivaled, took control from the start with several key shots. A 3-pointer and a layup helped her build an early 5-0 lead, which she extended to 11-0 before Stewart missed two more contested shots. Edwards sealed the win with another 3-pointer.
Other winners in the first round included No. 7 seed Shakira Austin, who beat Chelsea Gray 12-2. Top-seeded Arike Ogunbowale and Jewell Loyd had byes due to injuries to top opponents.
The tournament continues on Tuesday with single-elimination games played to 11 points or 10 minutes, whichever is reached first. The finals will be a best-of-three series with traditional scoring and a $350,000 prize pool at stake.
