Aaron Rodgers, the four-time NFL MVP and quarterback of the New York Jets, has hinted that he will take time to decide on his future after the end of the season unless he gets released immediately. This comes as a surprise given his recent request for sports media members to disclose their COVID-19 vaccination information.
Rodgers’ decision-making process is not new. After the 2022 NFL season, he spent four days in a “darkness retreat” to decide whether to return for another season or retire. Now at 41 years old and facing a career-worst passer rating, Rodgers will consider his options carefully.
The Jets are facing their own challenges, with general manager and head coach vacancies to fill this offseason. If they release Rodgers before June 1, 2025, they’ll be on the hook for $74.5 million in dead money. After that date, the cost drops to $4.5 million.
Rodgers’ contract also presents an interesting dynamic. While he has a no-trade clause, which would require his approval to be traded, there’s another consideration: the looming void years. In 2026 and beyond, Rodgers will cost the Jets millions against their salary cap, making it imperative for them to decide on his future soon.
For now, Rodgers’ focus remains on evaluating his options and discussing them with team management before making a decision about his place in the league.
