Aaron Rodgers’ New OC Tanner Engstrand Hired by New York Jets

The New York Jets have hired former Detroit Lions assistant coach Tanner Engstrand as their new offensive coordinator for 2025. Engstrand will work under first-year head coach Aaron Glenn, with whom he spent four seasons together on Dan Campbell’s staff in the NFL. In his current role, Engstrand oversaw a passing game that scored a league-high 564 points in 2024.

The Jets are entering their seventh consecutive season with a first-time head coach and playcaller, following Robert Saleh and Mike LaFleur in 2021. This move comes as the team navigates uncertainty at quarterback, with Aaron Rodgers’ status for the upcoming season still undecided. Glenn has stated that Rodgers will be evaluated like every other player on the roster.

Engstrand’s hiring is notable given his limited NFL experience. He previously worked under Jim Harbaugh at the University of San Diego and Michigan, and called plays in college and the XFL. The team also announced additional coaching hires, including Chris Harris as pass game coordinator and defensive backs coach, and Chris Banjo as special teams coordinator.

With two talented wide receivers in Garrett Wilson and Davante Adams, an offensive line featuring four returning starters, and a versatile running back in Breece Hall, Engstrand will face a strong foundation to build upon. However, the quarterback situation remains a key question mark, with backup Tyrod Taylor and rookie Jordan Travis under contract.
