Aaron Sorkin to Direct The Social Network Part II for Sony Pictures

Aaron Sorkin is set to direct The Social Network Part II, a follow-up film to his Oscar-winning drama about Facebook’s origins. Although titled “Part II”, the new movie will not be a straight sequel, but rather explores the story behind Jeff Horowitz’s explosive series of articles that exposed multiple harms caused by the social media giant.

Sorkin’s original screenplay is in development with Todd Black, Peter Rice, and Stuart Besser producing. The film project comes after years of speculation about a potential sequel, with Sorkin initially struggling to find the right angle. However, following the 2020 US Capitol attack, he found new inspiration, stating that Facebook played a part.

The new movie will focus on Facebook’s impact beyond the 2020 election, including its effect on teenagers, violence, and countries outside the US. Sorkin has sharpened his directing skills since the original Social Network was released in 2010, with credits including Molly’s Game and The Trial of the Chicago 7.

While no production date has been set, sources indicate that Sorkin will focus on finding ensemble cast members for the highly-coveted roles. Jesse Eisenberg, who played Mark Zuckerberg in the original film, may reprise his role or appear in some form, despite a reported denial by Eisenberg about Facebook’s involvement in January 6.

The film project comes as Meta faces criticism over its recent financial missteps and failed ventures.
