AARP Hearing Center: Calcium Supplements Not Recommended for Fall Prevention

Falls are a major concern for older adults, and the risk of falls and fractures increases with age. However, relying on calcium and vitamin D supplements to prevent falls and fractures is not recommended by health experts.

Calcium and vitamin D are essential for building strong bones, but supplementing with them in old age has little evidence to support its effectiveness in preventing falls and fractures. In fact, taking these supplements may even lead to more harm, such as an increased risk of kidney stones.

The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends that older adults focus on other preventive services related to falls and fractures, including screening for osteoporosis and structured exercise programs. Women 65 and older should get screened for osteoporosis, while those at high risk may be screened sooner.

Despite the risks, many older adults still rely on calcium supplements. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported nearly 39,000 deaths from falls in 2021, highlighting the need for effective prevention measures. Experts emphasize that preventing falls and fractures is crucial for maintaining independence and quality of life, making it essential to explore alternative strategies.

In contrast to relying on supplements, exercise programs can help maintain good bone health as one ages. The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends structured exercise programs to prevent falls in older adults at risk of falling. By prioritizing evidence-based prevention methods, older adults can take steps towards a safer and healthier future.
