Texas Governor Greg Abbott has threatened to oust Texas A&M University President Mark Welsh III over an alleged violation of the state’s ban on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). The dispute centers around a conference for underrepresented groups in business schools.
Abbott claimed that A&M was sending students to a conference with strict attendance requirements based on racial identity. The governor stated that such practices are against Texas law and would be “fixed immediately” or Welsh’s job would be at risk.
However, Welsh later clarified that the university had followed proper review procedures but acknowledged that they may not have fully considered the spirit of the state law. As a result, A&M will not send students to participate in this specific conference.
The dispute highlights the growing influence of lawmakers on higher education in Texas. The state’s DEI ban has already led to changes in scholarships, offices, and jobs. Some Republican lawmakers are pushing for further reforms, including ending faculty tenure and altering the role of faculty senates.
Abbott’s actions come as the state prepares to consider expanding its DEI ban during the new legislative session. Lawmakers have expressed interest in targeting curriculum and research under the current law.
