Activision has finally acknowledged the criticism surrounding Call of Duty skins in Black Ops 6, reversing its decision to carry forward all Black Ops 6 weapons and skins into Black Ops 7. The move comes after a lukewarm reception to the game’s reveal.
In a blog post published today, Activision addressed cosmetic concerns and took feedback seriously. “Some of you have said we’ve drifted from what made Call of Duty unique in the first place: immersive, intense, visceral and in many ways grounded,” the post reads. The developer acknowledges that some players felt the game’s identity had been compromised by gaudy crossover skins and anime bundles.
To address this, Activision has committed to crafting Black Ops 7 skins “to fit the Black Ops identity.” This change means that the new game will have a clean break from the previous title’s art style. Additionally, Black Ops 6 guns will not carry forward to Black Ops 7, but Double XP tokens and Gobblegums will still be included.
The decision marks an important shift for Activision, as it seeks to restore the franchise’s unique identity. The company has stated that Treyarch’s goal is to deliver a spiritual successor to Black Ops 2 while taking some big swings in new directions. With this change, Activision aims to create a more authentic Call of Duty experience in Black Ops 7.
