A recent advertisement for Activision’s upcoming ‘Guitar Hero Mobile’ game was surreptitiously posted on their official Instagram channel, featuring shockingly obvious AI-generated art. The post has since been hidden, but it can still be accessed with the link.
The ad claims a new Guitar Hero Mobile game will release in 2025 and bears an unmistakable mark of generative AI, raising questions about how long it would have taken for a human artist to create the same image. The artwork features a band with four guitarists, no drummer or vocalist, and the prompt bar has two blue paths.
This incident is not the first time Activision has faced criticism for using AI art in their games. In September 2024, Phil Spencer revealed he regrets passing on Destiny and Guitar Hero years ago due to doubts about its commercial viability.
Meanwhile, Fortnite Festival has stepped up to fill the void left by the absence of Guitar Hero, offering a similar experience with licensed soundtracks. However, fans are now clamoring for Activision to bring back classic titles such as True Crime and Def Jam.
The AI art in the latest ad has sparked widespread outrage among fans, many of whom feel it’s an insult to the franchise. The lack of human involvement in the creative process seems to be a point of contention, with some even calling for the developers to return to their roots.
