Adam McKay Warns ‘Wicked’ Could be Banned in 3-5 Years Due to American Polarization

Adam McKay has expressed concerns that his latest film adaptation, “Wicked,” could face a backlash and potentially be banned in the US within 3-5 years due to America’s growing conservatism. The Oscar-winning director likened the movie to other “radical big studio” films, including “The Hunger Games,” which he considers left-wing.

In an interview, McKay stated that the film’s themes of radicalization in the face of careerism and fascism are particularly striking given the current state of American politics. He noted that the timing of the film’s release, now that America is more right-wing and propagandized than ever, is not a coincidence.

McKay fears that if America continues on its current trajectory, it could lead to a ban on “Wicked” or similar films in the future. He mentioned that he has seen a resurgence of attempts to force religion into school curricula through textbooks, with Texas holding significant power over nationwide textbook approvals. This, combined with Trump’s influence, could have a negative impact on education.

The warning comes after McKay drew parallels between “Wicked” and other films that were considered left-wing, such as “Citizen Kane.” The film is based on the 1995 Broadway musical of the same name, which was adapted from Gregory Maguire’s novel.
