Adidas Designer Apologizes for Cultural Appropriation

Mexican-American designer Willy Chavarria has apologized for his Adidas sandal design, which was accused of cultural appropriation by Mexican authorities. The Oaxaca Slip On sandal features braided leather straps similar to traditional Zapotec Indigenous footwear known as huaraches.

Authorities claimed the design copied their heritage without permission. However, Chavarria said he intended to honor the cultural spirit of Oaxaca and its communities. He acknowledged the design fell short of respecting the community’s values.

Chavarria has gained recognition for his designs exploring Chicano culture, often mixing Mexican themes with American products. The apology comes days after Adidas released a public statement reaffirming its commitment to collaborate with local Indigenous communities.

The company also requested to meet with Oaxacan state officials to discuss repairing the damage caused by their design. Adidas acknowledged the cultural richness of Mexico’s Indigenous communities and values their artisanal heritage.
