Adidas Faces Mexico Backlash Over Cultural Appropriate Designs

A US fashion designer has sparked controversy after releasing a new sandal design inspired by traditional Mexican huarache sandals. The German athletic corporation, Adidas, has apologized and offered to meet with local authorities in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca.

The sandals, called the “Oaxaca Slip-Ons,” were designed by Willy Chavarria, who claims his father is Mexican-American. However, Mexico’s government and local officials say that the design was taken without permission or compensation from the Oaxacan community.

Chavarria has expressed regret for “appropriating” the name of the sandals, stating that he did not develop the design in partnership with the community. Adidas has acknowledged the criticism and says it values Mexican Indigenous culture.

The controversy highlights concerns over cultural appropriation in the fashion industry. Handicrafts are an important source of revenue for Mexico, where many people make a living from handmade products. The incident is part of a growing debate between Mexico and foreign companies accused of profiting from Indigenous cultures without permission or compensation.
