Adrian Grenier’s character Nate Cooper from the hit film The Devil Wears Prada won’t be returning for the sequel, according to Entertainment Weekly. This comes as a surprise, especially since it was expected that all original stars would reprise their roles in the follow-up.
The 2006 film followed Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) and her journey through New York fashion journalism, where she worked under the intimidating editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep). Nate’s relationship with Andy began to sour as her career picked up, leading some fans to label him as the true villain of the story.
Grenier previously expressed his understanding of why fans might see Nate in a negative light. In an interview, he explained that he used to be immature like Nate and didn’t always prioritize Andy’s career goals. However, after reflecting on their relationship, Grenier realized that Nate’s behavior was indeed selfish and lacking in support.
The original film’s director David Frankel had previously expressed doubts about the possibility of a sequel, stating that the story had been told and wouldn’t be revisited. Writer Aline Brosh McKenna also noted that magazines and publishing have changed significantly since the original film, making a direct sequel less feasible.
Despite this, fans are still hoping for The Devil Wears Prada 2 to move forward, with an expected release date in 2026.
