‘Adults’ Brings Gen Z’s Anxieties to the Sitcom Format

FX’s new comedy series “Adults” follows a group of aimless 20-somethings living together in Queens. The show’s creators, Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw, aim to tackle Gen Z’s anxieties through their quirky characters and relationships.

The main plotline centers around Samir, an impulsive slacker whose family is traveling, leaving the gang to navigate life together. The roommates include Billie, a neurotic overachiever; Issa, a talkative and confident woman; Anton, who forms fleeting connections but struggles to commit; and Paul Baker, a charming bisexual newcomer.

“Adults” finds its comedic footing when it exploits its characters’ quirks in creative ways. A standout episode involves the gang discovering Anton’s possible connection to a local stabber, while Charlie Cox guest stars as Billie’s former high school teacher in a hilarious and unexpected turn.

Set primarily in Toronto, the show prioritizes ridiculous sitcom setups over realistic portrayals of New York City. While it may not become a generation-defining sensation, “Adults” offers perfectly diverting TV when it hits its stride.
