AESC Pauses Construction of $1.6 Billion Electric Vehicle Battery Plant

AESC’s electric vehicle battery plant in Florence, South Carolina, has paused construction due to policy and market uncertainties, according to a statement from the company. The $1.6 billion Pee Dee factory was expected to employ 1,620 workers at full capacity.

The Japanese manufacturer Envision Automotive Energy Supply Co., announced plans to supply batteries for electric cars to be built at BMW’s Upstate campus and in Mexico last year. However, due to changing circumstances, AESC has decided to put construction on hold until the situation stabilizes.

AESC remains committed to meeting its investment and job creation goals, with CEO Brad Grantham stating that the company intends to fulfill its $1.6 billion commitment and create 1,600 jobs in the coming years. The Florence County Economic Development Partnership is working closely with AESC to understand the revised timeline and ensure the long-term viability of the project for the community.

The pause comes after AESC previously put a similar expansion phase on hold due to uncertainty. A spokesperson earlier stated that Facility 1 was still on track to begin production next year, but further comment could not be obtained at this time.
