The far-right Alternative for Germany party has accused the Magdeburg Christmas market killer of being a “closet jihadist” who was hiding his true intentions as an undercover Islamist. Co-leader Alice Weidel made the claims at a rally in Magdeburg, where 50-year-old Saudi psychiatrist Taleb al-Abdulmohsen ploughed his SUV into the crowd on December 20, killing five people and injuring over 235.
Weidel claimed that Abdulmohsen was hiding his true beliefs through a practice called taqiyyah, which allows Muslims to conceal their faith in non-Islamic societies. She described the attack as a “crime against humanity” motivated by Abdulmohsen’s hatred for Western values.
However, police are still investigating Abdulmohsen’s motives, with prosecutors suggesting that his grievance over Germany’s treatment of Saudi dissident asylum seekers may have driven him to act. Abdulmohsen has previously expressed anti-Islam views and supported far-right narratives on the “Islamisation” of Europe.
The attack has reignited debates on security and immigration ahead of Germany’s February 2025 snap elections. Weidel’s comments sparked chants of “deportation, deportation” from the crowd, highlighting the party’s hardline stance on immigration.
