AG Letitia James Case Declined by Virginia Grand Jury Again

A grand jury in Norfolk, Virginia, has refused to indict New York Attorney General Letitia James on mortgage fraud charges for a second time. The decision comes after a judge dismissed the original indictment last week due to the unlawful appointment of the top prosecutor who presented the case. James’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, called the grand jury’s refusal “a decisive rejection of a case that should never have existed in the first place.” However, administration officials are not ready to concede defeat, suggesting they may try again or appeal last week’s ruling.

The Justice Department opted to reindict after the original indictment was dismissed. But on Thursday, a new prosecutor, Roger Keller, from Missouri, took over and presented the case to the grand jury. This marked an unusual event, as grand juries rarely reject a prosecutor’s case.

The case against James stems from allegations that she lied on loan documents for a house purchased in Norfolk in 2023. However, prosecutors have viewed the case against James as weak, citing similar circumstances in a previously dismissed indictment.
