Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, the spiritual leader of the Ismaili sect of Islam and friend of Queen Elizabeth II, has died aged 88. He was the spiritual leader of about 12 million people worldwide.
Born in Switzerland, Prince Karim inherited his title as the 49th Imam of the Shia Imami Ismailis at the age of 20. He founded the Aga Khan Development Network and became a prominent figure in international philanthropy.
A longtime fan of horseracing, Prince Karim owned several horses, including Shergar, which was stolen by gunmen in Ireland in 1983. He is survived by his children and grandchildren.
The announcement of his death was made on the Aga Khan Development Network’s website, stating that he passed away peacefully in Lisbon surrounded by his family. A successor will be announced in due course.
