Age Has Nothing to Do with Sex: Debunking Common Myths

Aging is often associated with declining sex drive and performance, but many people in their 50s and beyond are challenging this notion. In fact, a 2019 survey found that 43% of Americans over age 50 say their sex life is “just as or more adventurous” than it was in their younger days.

Clinical sexologist Lawrence Siegel notes that while changes in sexual feeling and function with aging are normal, problems can arise when we assume they’re inevitable. It’s essential to establish new norms for ourselves, adjusting our expectations as time passes. For example, a 55-year-old should not try to maintain the same level of interest or stamina as a 25-year-old.

Negative beliefs about sex and aging can be a significant obstacle. Psychotherapist Nan Wise says debunking myths is crucial, as hormonal changes can negatively impact sex lives. People in their 50s must “get past societal stigma that they’re less sexual due to their age.” Instead, many are more confident and assertive, leading to better sex.

Vaginal dryness and low libido are common issues during menopause. Stress, physical health problems, mental health issues, medication side effects, and declining hormone levels can all contribute to decreased desire. Siegel suggests relieving performance pressure and changing the objective of sex from a goal-oriented experience to a pleasurable one.

To combat lower sexual desire, stress-reducing practices like yoga, meditation, and supplements may be helpful. Daily breathing exercises can access the parasympathetic “restorative” state, reducing stress hormones and increasing libido. By giving yourself permission to start from where you are, you can loosen and soften accumulated stress.

Ultimately, pleasure is a necessity for a healthy mind and body. By debunking common myths and adopting a more relaxed approach to sex, individuals in their 50s and beyond can continue to enjoy fulfilling and pleasurable intimate experiences.
