AI Adoption Shows Limited Productivity Gains for Most Workers

A recent report by OpenAI shows that while 75% of workers report improved speed and quality with AI at work, productivity gains are modest. According to the report, average users save around 40-60 minutes per day, which is a significant improvement but not as sweeping as expected.

The report found that weekly messages in ChatGPT Enterprise have increased nearly eightfold in the past year, and usage of structured workflows has risen 19 times. However, workers say they complete certain tasks more quickly, such as IT troubleshooting and coding improvements, yet day-to-day gains still add up to roughly an hour on average.

A divide exists between “frontier” users and the average worker. These heavy users report bigger gains of over 10 hours a week, but even they save around 2 hours per day. OpenAI suggests that future gains may come from how organizations reshape processes and workflows around AI, rather than relying solely on the model itself.

For most workers, AI is still a useful tool that speeds up work and makes some tasks less tedious. However, the typical worker saving under an hour a day points to a technology that is powerful but limited. Whether productivity gains will continue to climb remains to be seen.
