AI Advancements Made Me Realize Synthetic Humans Are Near Reality

Alien: Earth star Timothy Olyphant says playing a synthetic character made him realize how fast artificial intelligence technology is advancing in the real world. The eight-episode series, premiering on Hulu and FX, takes place two years before the events of the 1979 sci-fi classic Alien and explores a universe where corporations are more powerful than countries.

Olyphant plays Kirsh, a synthetic at Prodigy’s facility, who warns about humans’ precarious places in the food chain. He notes that AI has become so advanced that it can read news articles, making Kirsh’s character seem almost human. The show also features a cyborg security officer with trauma and a CEO of a powerful corporation.

The cast credits the show’s writer, Noah Hawley, for creating complex characters with mixed motivations. They praise working together in Thailand, where filming took place, as it brought them closer as a cast. The country’s heat and humidity influenced the show’s storylines and performances.

Filming on location in Thailand added to the drama of the show, which depicts humans fighting against corporate control. The cast has praised Hawley’s writing and the experience of working together in a foreign environment. As Olyphant noted, “It was a special one, special place.” The series is set to premiere Tuesday on Hulu and FX in North America, and Disney+ internationally.
