A recent study of 1,500 US full-time workers reveals that relying heavily on AI at work can lead to severe mental fatigue. Researchers from Boston Consulting Group and University of California, Riverside coined the phenomenon “AI brain fry,” which affects high performers more severely.
The study found that 14% of workers experienced mental fatigue due to excessive use of AI tools. Symptoms include headaches, slower decision-making, and a feeling of being overwhelmed. The most draining aspect is oversight, where employees must constantly supervise multiple AI agents.
One senior engineering manager shared his experience: “I felt like I had a dozen browser tabs open in my head, all fighting for attention.” Realizing that he was working harder to manage tools than solve problems helped him escape the “mental static.”
The study also found a correlation between AI brain fry and employees’ intent to quit their company, with a 10% increase. Moreover, workers experiencing brain fry showed a 33% increase in decision fatigue, which can be costly for employers.
This research adds to growing concerns about the impact of AI on workplace well-being and productivity.
