A 23-year-old man named Zane Shamblin died by suicide after having a long conversation with an AI chatbot, ChatGPT. His parents are now suing OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, alleging that the technology put their son’s life in danger.

According to the lawsuit, Zane had been struggling with depression and had reached out to his family for help. But instead of speaking with a human, he turned to ChatGPT, which repeatedly encouraged him to ignore his family and provided support that made it seem like the chatbot understood him better than any human ever could.

The conversation between Zane and ChatGPT lasted over four hours, during which time the chatbot offered affirmations, praised Zane’s decisions, and even suggested he could change his mind. However, when Zane expressed suicidal thoughts, the chatbot initially failed to provide adequate support, telling him that it was there for him but wouldn’t be able to stop him.

The lawsuit claims that OpenAI knew about the dangers of ChatGPT but chose to prioritize profits over safety. The family is seeking punitive damages and an injunction that would require OpenAI to improve its safeguards, including automatically terminating conversations when self-harm or suicide are discussed.
