AI Data Centers Strain US Power Grids

The growing demand for electricity from artificial intelligence-focused data centers is exacerbating domestic power issues in the US. According to Bloomberg, over 75% of distorted power readings across the country come from homes near data centers, which are already putting stress on already fragile grids.

Data center construction has surged in Atlanta, with a 76% increase in the first six months of 2024 compared to the same period last year. This has led to local opposition, as city council members banned new construction of such facilities in key areas.

However, not all cities are opposed to data centers. A recent report suggested that those in the Midwest and South with well-educated workforces, affordable housing, and low labor costs could benefit from these facilities, driving growth and economic development.
