The yellow brick road is set to take center stage in the Las Vegas Sphere when an AI-enhanced version of “The Wizard of Oz” debuts on August 28. The immersive experience, featuring a massive 160,000-square-foot screen display and 167,000 speakers, promises to transport viewers into the world of Oz like never before.
Tickets are now on sale for $104, with multiple showings daily available. To enhance the film’s visuals, Jennifer Koester, president and COO of the Sphere, worked with Warner Bros. and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences using artificial intelligence and film archives.
The AI models were trained on additional footage that never made it into the original 1939 film, allowing for previously unseen details like Dorothy’s hands and legs. The original songs from the film have also been remastered and reorchestrated by an 80-piece orchestra, adding to the immersive experience.
Visitors will feel the tornado’s swirls through haptic seats, smell the poppies on a 16K x 16K LED screen, and tremble with the Cowardly Lion. The event aims to evoke feelings of wonder and awe, making it an unforgettable experience for those who witness it.
The Sphere’s unique venue promises an all-encompassing adventure that begins as soon as visitors enter its atrium and transform into the world of Kansas. Interactive activations will await after exiting the seats, further enhancing the magic of Oz.
An outdoor installation featuring the Wicked Witch of the East’s legs and ruby slippers is also part of the promotion, with photo opportunities available daily. With its innovative technology and captivating experience, this AI-enhanced Wizard of Oz promises to be a spectacle unlike any other in Las Vegas.
