To educate the public, the Denver Police Department and Denver City Attorney’s Office teamed up with Chase Bank to host a workshop on protecting residents from falling victim to scams.
Authorities report an alarming increase in scam-related cases, with officers getting multiple calls daily. They warn that scammers use AI to manipulate emotions, creating a sense of urgency to pressure victims into making rash decisions.
AI technology allows criminals to impersonate loved ones by mimicking their voices and spoofing phone numbers. Scammers also use AI-generated images and videos to create realistic but fake scenarios, such as deep fakes, to extort money from victims.
Experts offer several tips to keep yourself safe from scams:
* Block unwanted calls or text messages
* Never give personal or financial information over the phone or computer unless initiated by a trusted entity
* Slow down and don’t give in to pressure to act immediately
* Be wary of payment methods like cryptocurrency, gift cards, or peer-to-peer payment services
* Don’t rely on caller ID, as scammers can mask their numbers
* Law enforcement will never contact you demanding money
