Researchers at Anthropic, an AI startup, are warning that artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly advancing and may soon replace up to half of all entry-level office jobs. According to Dario Amodei, the company’s CEO, AI could automate away 50% of all entry-level white-collar jobs within five years.
Anthropic experts predict a “drop in white-collar workers” over the next two to five years, even if current AI progress stalls. Sholto Douglas, an Anthropic researcher, stated that the current suite of algorithms is sufficient to automate white-collar work provided you have enough of the right kinds of data.
Trenton Bricken, another expert at Anthropic, agrees that automation will occur within the next five years. The concern has sparked a heated debate among tech figures and companies, with some acknowledging that AI will have an impact on desk jobs.
Major companies like Shopify and Duolingo are already slashing hiring for roles AI can handle. Revelio Labs data shows a steep drop in job postings for high-exposure positions like IT and data analysis.
Anthropic has recently unveiled its latest generation of cutting-edge AI models, Claude Opus 4 and Claude Sonnet 4, which represent a significant leap in AI’s coding ability. While some experts welcome this advancement, others warn that it could lead to a “pretty terrible decade” for workers before things start to improve.
The scenario where machines do the thinking, and humans are left with hands-on work, raises concerns about quality of life. Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei describes a future where people have lost their jobs but not yet achieved breakthroughs in biological research, highlighting the need for radical abundance to compensate for job losses.
