Macrohard, an ambitious AI project from XAI, has stalled following leadership changes and the suspension of a data collection project involving 600 contractors. The project aimed to build an AI white-collar worker but faced difficulty scaling up after its launch in August.
CEO Elon Musk announced Macrohard as part of his company Tesla’s investment agreement with xAI in February. However, Macrohard leaders have left the company, and Musk has expressed displeasure with the team’s progress.
Macrohard is a joint xAI-Tesla project, working on real-time control methods to process continuous streams of information, similar to Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system and humanoid robot. In contrast, xAI’s Macrohard was initially trained on static images.
A data annotation project for Macrohard involving over 600 AI tutors has been paused since February due to the discovery of flaws in the model. It’s unclear how many people remain assigned to the project.
Tesla, meanwhile, is ramping up its own AI agent project called “Digital Optimus,” which aims to perform tasks like autonomous software interaction and real-time decision-making. The approach differs from Macrohard’s use of static images.
