AI Studios Raise Concerns Over Copyright on Fan Creations

A recent trend of creating Ghibli-style images using AI tools has raised concerns over copyright infringement, sparking debate among artists, lawyers, and the animation studio itself. The tool, which uses a “conservative approach” to mimic individual artists’ styles, allows users to generate fan creations in the style of Studio Ghibli’s iconic animations.

The trend highlights the use of AI training on copyrighted creative works, with some questioning whether companies have permission or licenses to train models on such works. Artists and lawyers argue that this practice is problematic if done without consent and compensation.

Studio Ghibli declined to comment on the matter, while OpenAI has largely encouraged the “Ghiblification” experiments. However, concerns over AI’s role in animation are not new, with founder Hayao Miyazaki expressing skepticism about its use in a 2016 documentary footage. Miyazaki stated that AI could create “grotesque movements” that would be hard for humans to imagine.

The trend also sparked controversy when President Trump’s administration used the White House’s official X account to post a Ghibli-style image, which some artists deemed an insult and exploitation of Miyazaki’s work. The incident has raised questions about copyright law and AI-generated content.
