AI Surpasses Surgeons in Writing Surgical Reports

Artificial intelligence (AI) has shown to be superior to human surgeons in writing post-operative reports, according to a recent study. Researchers trained computer-vision systems to analyze videos of robotic-assisted operations and generate narrative operative reports. The results showed that 53% of reports written by surgeons contained discrepancies, compared to 29% of AI-generated reports.

The new technology has the potential to reduce documentation burden, improve accuracy, promote transparency, and decrease subjectivity in surgical documentation. In a separate study, AI also outperformed human technicians in analyzing long-term heart rhythm monitoring data, identifying severe arrhythmias missed by humans in 4.4% of cases but only in 0.3% of AI-generated analysis.

These advancements could alleviate the bottleneck in healthcare caused by the lack of trained staff to analyze ambulatory ECGs, allowing for more and longer recordings that would benefit patients. The study’s leader believes that AI can solve this problem, offering a promising solution for improving healthcare efficiency and accuracy.
