AI Threatens Entry-Level Engineering Jobs, Companies Adapt

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the job market for entry-level engineers, with companies such as Anthropic and Retool shifting their focus towards hiring more experienced employees. According to Mike Krieger, Anthropic’s CPO and co-founder of Instagram, the labor market will be tough for new graduates, and the role of entry-level engineers is evolving.

Krieger stated that Anthropic focuses on hiring experienced engineers due to its internal structure not yet supporting a comprehensive internship program. This reflects the broader impact of AI on the job market, where coders are outsourcing more work to machines, leaving humans with tasks such as user interaction design and review. However, there is an exception: individuals who excel at using AI tools like Anthropic’s Claude chatbot.

Anthropic is hiring for 200 roles, most requiring five or more years of experience, while a few positions in sales require one to two years of experience. CEO Dario Amodei has warned that AI could wipe out up to 50% of entry-level jobs. Meanwhile, Retool CEO David Hsu notes that workers have leverage over CEOs and may resist AI-driven labor replacement.
