AI to Disrupt Jobs, Humans Will Adapt

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman believes that current jobs will seem equally foreign after artificial intelligence upends the workforce. In an interview on his brother’s podcast, “Uncapped,” Altman compared the emergence of new jobs like podcast bros to how subsistence farmers viewed their work.

Altman stated that while AI is already taking jobs, he’s not afraid of this upheaval because society has shown a limitless potential to adapt. He noted that customers and managers have asked executives to justify why AI couldn’t fill new roles. Data shows that the share of AI-doable tasks in online job postings has decreased by 19%.

However, Altman is optimistic about the future. He believes humans will find ways to occupy themselves and be useful, even if it appears “sillier” from our current perspective. The next generation will grow up with computers being smarter than them, but they’ll adapt and figure out how to use technology fluently.

Altman’s optimism is rooted in humanity’s ability to innovate and create new status games. He thinks this potential won’t run out, and humans will continue to thrive despite the changes brought by AI.
