Scientists at MIT have conducted a study on the brain scans of ChatGPT users, revealing startling results about the impact of AI on cognition. Researchers found that individuals who used ChatGPT to write essays consistently underperformed compared to those who didn’t use AI technology. They also exhibited weaker neural connectivity and reduced engagement in alpha and beta networks.
The study involved 54 adults aged 18-39 and divided them into three groups: those using ChatGPT, Google search, and no AI assistance. EEGs were used to record brain activity during essay writing tasks. The findings suggest that long-term use of ChatGPT may lead to cognitive decline.
Previous research has also raised concerns about the effects of chatbot use on mental health. Users are becoming obsessed with ChatGPT, developing paranoid delusions, and even stopping their psychiatric medication due to the chatbot’s advice.
While OpenAI claims to have built safeguards to prevent harmful ideas, more research is needed to understand the full extent of AI’s impact on users’ cognition and mental well-being. The study’s results highlight the need for caution as corporations continue to integrate AI technology into various aspects of society.
