AirPlay Hack Exposed: How Wireless Connections Become Vulnerable

A newly discovered security vulnerability in Apple’s AirPlay feature can allow hackers to spread malware between devices within the same network, putting millions of smart-home devices at risk. The “AirBorne” attack enables hackers to deploy malware, snoop on private data, or eavesdrop on conversations when connected to the same Wi-Fi network as devices.

Experts warn that many AirPlay-enabled devices may remain vulnerable due to infrequent updates, leaving potential risks for years across numerous models. Updating all devices to the latest software is crucial, especially those connected to AirPlay. Disabling the feature altogether is also recommended, as it serves as an access point for hackers to take control of devices.

Gal Elbaz, chief technology officer at Oligo, explains that the vulnerability affects everything due to weaknesses in Apple’s AirPlay protocol and software development kit (SDK). With 23 identified flaws, many third-party gadgets may never be patched if their manufacturers haven’t addressed the issue.
