AI’s Next Frontier: Affordable Domain-Specific Models in Sight

A new frontier in artificial intelligence (AI) development is emerging, with a focus on creating affordable, domain-specific models that can excel in specific fields. According to Yang Hongxia, a former Alibaba scientist and current researcher at PolyUniversity (PolyU), this represents a significant breakthrough.

Yang notes that while large language models (LLMs) have made impressive strides in general intelligence, they often fall short when applied to specialized domains such as manufacturing and biochemistry. This is largely due to the lack of relevant data incorporated into AI model development, which cannot be crawled from the general web.

To address this gap, Yang’s team is working on democratizing AI development, with a primary goal of driving fundamental scientific breakthroughs. The team, comprising students from top universities in China including PolyU, Zhejiang University, and Harbin Institute of Technology, aims to create more adaptable and specialized models that can tackle complex problems.

By bridging the gap between general-purpose LLMs and domain-specific models, AI’s next frontier is set to revolutionize fields such as manufacturing and biochemistry.
