Alabama AG Marshall Targets Costco Over DEI Policies

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall has signed a letter with 18 other state attorneys general demanding that wholesale chain Costco dismantle its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies or explain their continuation within 30 days.

The letter cites concerns that DEI practices “undermine the ideal of individualism” and “the American dream”. However, this criticism is met with resistance from some who see it as a threat to free market capitalism.

Costco maintains that its efforts around diversity, equity, and inclusion follow its code of ethics and are essential for creating opportunities for all employees. The company’s Board of Directors stated that their DEI initiatives remind everyone at the company of the importance of inclusivity.

It is unclear what action the attorneys general can take if Costco does not comply with the letter. Meanwhile, some public interest advocates have praised Costco for maintaining its commitment to diversity and inclusion, despite facing opposition from some politicians.
