A man from Alabama has been put to death for a 1997 murder of a gas station clerk, nearly three decades later. Geoffrey West, who was 50 years old at the time of his execution, had pleaded guilty in 2000 and was sentenced to death for Margaret Parrish Berry’s murder. Despite appeals from the victim’s family, Governor Kay Ivey decided not to use her clemency powers to spare West’s life.
Berry’s son, Will Berry, forgave West before the execution, citing his mother’s teachings on forgiveness. The execution took place on a nitrogen gas chamber and was completed at 6:22 pm.
