Alabama Man Executed with Nitrogen Gas for 1997 Crime

Alabamian Geoffrey Todd West was put to death on Thursday by nitrogen gas execution after apologizing to his victim’s family and pleas from the woman’s son to spare his life. West, 50, had been convicted of killing a woman during a 1997 gas station robbery. He died at 6:22 pm due to lack of oxygen in the nitrogen mask.

West admitted to committing the crime but expressed remorse for his actions, saying he struggles to understand what happened as a young man and deeply regrets it. His son-in-law, Will Berry, urged him to be spared, citing that taking another life would not help his family.

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey oversaw the execution, stating that justice had been served and prayers were offered for healing. The use of nitrogen gas has now been tried in seven executions nationwide, with Alabama being the first state to implement this method.
