Boise-based grocery chains WinCo Foods and Kroger faced different fates in a recent annual research project. Dunnhumby’s Retailer Preference Index revealed that WinCo rose ten spots, securing the fourth spot, while Kroger plummeted eight places to 11th place.
The survey of 11,000 US consumers highlighted the desire for customers to save money as a key factor driving the rankings. WinCo, known for its no-frills shopping with low prices, benefited from this trend. In contrast, Albertsons, which recently testified in court about higher-than-expected prices, saw the biggest drop in rank.
The index found that stores near the top of the ranking win a larger share of customers’ budgets. Meanwhile, Kroger-Albertsons merger and high-profile court cases regarding price gouging and anti-competitive practices appeared to take a toll on customer perception of these organizations’ banners. WinCo’s improved customer perceptions in key areas, aligning well with its strengths, contributed to its rise in the ranking.
