Alcaraz, Swiatek Carry Winning Streaks to US Open

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek will head into the 2025 US Open as two of the top contenders for the title after winning their respective Cincinnati titles on Monday. Alcaraz, a former New York champ, claimed his first Grand Slam title in 2022 and now brings a six-match winning streak to Queens. He defeated Jannik Sinner in the final, with Sinner forced to retire due to illness.

In their past four tournaments, Alcaraz and Sinner have met in every final, with Sinner’s only win coming at Wimbledon. However, they will meet again on hard courts at the US Open, where Alcaraz is seeking his second Grand Slam title.

Alcaraz’s semifinal opponent, Alexander Zverev, was unable to resist him, losing 6-4, 6-3. Alcaraz also had a tough match against Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals but came out on top.

Swiatek dominated her Cincinnati tournament, winning five matches without losing a set and never facing a tiebreak. She defeated Elena Rybakina and Jasmine Paolini in the last two rounds to take home the title.

Like at Wimbledon, where she won as an underdog, Swiatek is surprised by her success on the US Open surface. “I don’t know why I win tournaments that are like this,” she said during the trophy ceremony. “So thank you [to my team] for forcing me to become a better player and learn how to play on all these faster surfaces.”

Swiatek has a strong record at the US Open, with an 80% win rate (20-5). She will look to repeat her success from three years ago when she and Alcaraz both won titles.
