Aldi Faces Lawsuit Over Packaging Similarity to Mondelēz Snacks

Discount grocer Aldi is facing a lawsuit filed by snack giant Mondelēz International, which claims that Aldi’s private-label cookie and snack cracker packaging “blatantly copies” its brands. The lawsuit names several products, including Oreo, Chips Ahoy, Nutter Butter, Wheat Thins, Nilla Wafers, Ritz Crackers, and Original Premium Saltine Crackers.

Mondelēz alleges that Aldi’s actions confuse and mislead customers, take advantage of its reputation, and cause the company to experience economic loss. The retailer allegedly copied unique elements of Mondelēz’s trademarked brand identity, such as an image of a chocolate sandwich cookie tilted to the right and a light halo around the product.

This is not the first time Aldi has faced criticism over packaging similarities with Mondelēz products. In previous instances, the retailer was contacted about copycat Teddy Grahams, Belvita Biscuits, Tate’s Bake Shop Cookies, and Triscuit Crackers, which were subsequently discontinued or adjusted to comply with trademark laws.

The case is ongoing, and Aldi has not commented on the lawsuit.
