Actor Alec Baldwin’s film “Rust” has been released in theaters over three years after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was shot and killed on set. The incident occurred on October 21, 2021, when Baldwin used a gun as a prop and it discharged, killing Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. Both Baldwin and the film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez, were charged with involuntary manslaughter.
The charges against Baldwin were twice dismissed in 2023 and 2024 before being reinstated. In January, Baldwin sued New Mexico prosecutors and sheriff’s office officials, alleging “malicious” prosecution. Meanwhile, Gutierrez was sentenced to 18 months in prison for her role in the incident, although she later appealed her conviction.
The FBI forensic report concluded that the gun used in the fatal shooting could not have been fired without pulling the trigger, contradicting Baldwin’s earlier statement that he didn’t pull the trigger. The film ultimately resumed production in April 2023 and has now been released to the public after a nearly three-year delay.
