Detroit Tigers miss out on third baseman Alex Bregman in free agency, as he signs a three-year, $120 million contract with the Boston Red Sox. The deal includes an opt-out clause after the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
The Tigers offered a six-year contract worth $171.5 million, but ultimately fell short of securing Bregman’s services. The main difference between the offers was the average annual value: the Red Sox offered $40 million per season, while the Tigers offered nearly $28.58 million per year over six years.
Without Bregman, the Tigers will rely on players like Matt Vierling and Jace Jung to fill the void at third base. Vierling has experience starting games at the position, while Jung is a prospect with high upside on offense.
Bregman’s decision is not a surprise, given his impressive track record as one of the best all-around players in baseball. The two-time All-Star hit .260 with 26 home runs and 44 walks last season, posting an .798 OPS.
The Tigers’ loss is notable, as Bregman would have provided valuable leadership to younger players. His signing with the Red Sox marks a significant move for the team, which now faces the challenge of filling the gap left by his departure.
