Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin scored his first overtime playoff goal in 45 games to seal a win against the Montreal Canadiens on Monday night. The goal, which came 2 minutes and 26 seconds into the extra period, marked Ovechkin’s second score of the game and his 74th postseason goal.
Ovechkin downplayed the milestone, saying “a goal is a goal,” but his teammates praised him for leading by example on the ice. “He made a couple of big plays for us tonight, was physical, set the tone,” said Capitals coach Spencer Carbery.
Longtime teammate Tom Wilson echoed Ovechkin’s importance to the team. “It’s unbelievable… He just continues to step up, man. He’s a playoff player.” Goaltender Logan Thompson also lauded Ovechkin’s performance, saying “Guy’s the best player in the world” and praising his clutch performances throughout the game.
Ovechkin continued to showcase his impressive skills, scoring on the power play late in the first period with a shot from his trademark spot. The goal was nearly identical to one he scored four years ago to break Wayne Gretzky’s record for most goals in NHL history. Ovechkin now has 74 postseason goals, cementing his status as one of the league’s all-time greats.
