Washington Capitals Forward Alex Ovechkin’s future in the NHL remains uncertain after an email to season-ticket holders mistakenly claimed his next season would be his last. The team has denied the claim, stating it was sent by a corporate sales employee. Despite this, Ovechkin had previously said he intends to play another season, which would mark his 21st year in the league. The 40-year-old star broke Wayne Gretzky’s career goal-scoring record earlier this spring with 897 goals and is set to enter the final year of his current contract in 2025-26. Ovechkin played a key role in leading the team past the first round but fell short against Eastern Conference foes in the postseason, marking their 15th consecutive loss in that round.
