Alex Ovechkin scored his 888th career goal in the Washington Capitals’ 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday, moving him closer to Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record. With seven goals away from breaking Gretzky’s mark, Ovechkin needs one more score to reach 899.
The milestone marked Ovechkin’s 35th goal of the season, giving him a 15th career 35-goal season – an NHL record. This achievement puts him among the top 12 players in league history with 10 or more 35-goal seasons.
Ovechkin attributes his consistent scoring to his durability and ability to create space on the ice. Former teammate Mike Gartner praises Ovechkin’s skillset, saying it’s “remarkable” that he can be open for just one second before scoring.
With 13 games remaining, Ovi needs five more goals to reach the 40-goal plateau for the 14th time and solidify his record ahead of Wayne Gretzky’s 12 seasons with 40 or more goals.
