Alex Ovechkin broke the record for most goals scored on a single goalie, beating Leevi Merilainen in overtime to give the Washington Capitals a 1-0 victory over the Senators. The goal marked his 27th career overtime score and extended his record.
Ovechkin took a pass from Rasmus Sandin on a 2-on-1 breakaway before firing it past Merilainen, who became the 179th goalie he has scored against, breaking a tie with Jaromir Jagr. The Capitals star is now just 21 goals away from Wayne Gretzky’s career record of 894.
The 39-year-old winger is on pace to reach 895 goals and beyond this spring, with an impressive goal-scoring streak that includes 13 overtime goals on the road. Ovechkin also made history by scoring in overtime during a 1-0 game for the first time in his career, surpassing Jagr and John Tavares for the most in NHL history.
Ovechkin’s goal was his 21st of the season in just 29 games, with 20 goals per season being a consistent mark throughout his 20-year league career.
