Alexa to Gain Major AI Upgrade in February

Amazon’s voice assistant Alexa is set for a significant upgrade later this month. The company will hold an event in New York on February 26, where Panos Panay, head of Amazon’s Devices and Services team, will discuss the latest innovations from the Alexa team.

The upgrade is expected to introduce generative AI capabilities, which will enable Alexa to engage in more natural conversations and complete complex tasks. This would be a major evolution for Alexa, which has been processing one command at a time since its debut in 2014.

Amazon’s competitors, such as OpenAI and Google, are also developing increasingly sophisticated AI assistants. The latest upgrade could potentially introduce a paid tier for advanced capabilities, with estimates suggesting Amazon may charge between $5 and $10 per month.

The event comes amid growing competition in the smart home market, where Apple is rumored to be launching a new Siri-powered display that can control household devices. This device is expected to launch in March and could mark a significant push by Apple to compete more aggressively with Amazon and Google.
