Allies Unite Against Trump’s Trade Tariffs

Foreigners, particularly those from Canada and Denmark, have grown weary of US President Donald Trump’s disdainful attitude towards their interests. However, this sentiment has given way to a renewed sense of common purpose and national pride.

The recent declaration of “Liberation Day” by the US, which announced sweeping new trade tariffs, was met with criticism from longtime allies. Yet, this shift in policy has led to an extraordinary political response at home.

In Canada, Prime Minister Mark Carney’s tough stance against US tariffs has propelled him into a solid lead ahead of his party’s upcoming election. Mexico and Britain have also seen growing support for their governments’ efforts to counter the dramatic shift in US tone and policy.

A recent poll across the 27-member European Union found that 74% of respondents believe their countries benefit from EU membership, the highest level since the question was first posed 40 years ago. In Denmark, spontaneous Facebook campaigns to boycott American goods have met with success, while around 70% of Swedes say they have refused to buy an American product or considered doing so as a political protest.

The shift in public opinion has led many voters to redirect their anger towards those in power in Washington rather than their own governments. This newfound sense of national solidarity is likely to play a crucial role in any potential response to the US’s tough new approach.
